What Is Multi-Level Deck Building?
Multi-level deck building constructs a deck across two or more distinct elevations, connected by stairs or transitions, rather than a single flat platform. It is especially useful in Ferndale, PA yards with sloped terrain, or for homeowners who want to separate zones for dining, lounging, and grilling at different heights. Multi-level decks also work well for tying together a walkout basement level with an upper floor entry, creating one connected outdoor space instead of two separate ones.
Why This Matters for Your Home
Multi-level structures carry more structural complexity than single-level decks, since each level needs its own properly sized footings, framing, and support while also tying cleanly into the levels above and below it. Poorly planned transitions between levels create awkward stair placement, uneven rise and run, or structural connections that are not adequately braced. Getting the engineering right at each level matters more here than on a standard deck, since a failure at one level affects the whole structure.
Our Process
Survey elevation changes
We measure the exact grade changes across your yard to determine how many levels make sense and where transitions should fall.
Engineer each level independently
Every level gets its own footing and framing plan sized to its specific span and load, rather than treating the whole structure as one uniform system.
Build connecting stairs and transitions
Stairs and landings between levels are built with consistent rise and run, tied structurally into both levels they connect.
Integrate railings across levels
Railings are planned to meet code at every elevation change and transition point, not just around the outer perimeter.
What to Expect
Multi-level projects begin with a detailed site survey to map your yard's elevation changes accurately, since this drives the entire design. Construction proceeds level by level, typically starting with the lowest elevation and building upward. These projects generally take longer than single-level decks, often three to five weeks in Ferndale, PA depending on how many levels and transitions are involved.
Why Choose Stonewood Decks for Multi-Level Deck Building
Seventeen years of engineering multi-level structures where each level is properly footed and framed on its own.
We survey elevation changes precisely before design, so transitions and stairs land where they should.
Railings and guards are planned across every level and transition point, not just the outer edge.
Our crews build level by level with attention to how each section ties structurally into the next.
Multi-Level Deck Building Considerations for Ferndale, PA Properties
Multi-Level Deck Building in Ferndale, PA comes with practical realities that a generic checklist misses, from how local soil and drainage affect footing depth to how Ferndale, PA sun and humidity cycles affect material choice and finish schedules. A crew that has completed multi-Level Deck Building projects specifically in this area knows which details matter here versus in a different climate, and that local experience shapes every recommendation we make, from framing spacing to whether deck design should be considered alongside the current project. Over 17 years working throughout Ferndale, PA, we have built up a clear picture of what holds up in this specific environment, and we apply that directly to every multi-Level Deck Building project we take on, rather than relying on generic, one-size-fits-all standards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Generally yes, due to the additional footings, framing, and transition work required at each level. The increase depends on how many levels and how complex the transitions are, which we will price specifically for your yard.
Sloped yards, properties with a walkout basement, or yards where you want distinct zones for different activities all tend to benefit from a multi-level layout more than a flat, single-level deck would provide.
Through stairs and landings built with consistent rise and run, structurally tied into both levels they connect. We plan these transitions during the design phase to make sure they feel natural to walk.
Yes, each level typically requires its own properly sized footings and support posts sized to that level's specific span and load, rather than sharing a single foundation system.
Most multi-level projects in Ferndale, PA take three to five weeks depending on the number of levels, transitions, and overall complexity of the design.
In some cases yes, particularly if budget requires spreading the project out, though we will design the full structure upfront so later phases tie in correctly rather than being an afterthought.
